Echenique fears "the worst" of the CGPJ in the renewal of the TC and calls on the PSOE to act in the face of the "seditious" attitude of the PP

"It would be a surprise of cosmic dimensions that the CGPJ, from between two magistrates, appointed one with progressive ideas," he warns.

MADRID, 24 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The spokesman for United We Can in Congress, Pablo Echenique, has confessed that "the worst" is feared by the General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ) in the proposals that it must issue to renew the two corresponding members of the Constitutional Court He has also exhorted the progressive majority to react to the "seditious behavior" that he blames on the PP for continuing to block the renewal of the governing body of the judges, which expired more than three years ago.

"It would be a surprise of cosmic dimensions that the CGPJ, from among those two magistrates, appointed one with progressive ideas", Echenique launched during an interview with Europa Press, about his expectations with the governing body of the judges after the reform was approved 'express', which enables him to appoint two members of the high court despite having an expired mandate.

Echenique has stressed that the CGPJ is now empowered to make these appointments, and that it must do so no later than September 13, but he admits that he is not optimistic because the current composition of the body is "mostly conservative." "In short, I expect the worst from the Judiciary," he has sentenced.

Regarding the other two magistrates for the TC that corresponds to appoint the Council of Ministers, Echenique does not know the details and the names that will be put on the table, since, he alleges, the Parliament "does not participate in any way" in this process.

In any case, the leader of the purple formation has highlighted that the important thing here is that the Constitutional can be renewed, as should also happen to the CGPJ, which, he has denounced, suffers from an "inadmissible" situation of "kidnapping" by the PP, behavior that he calls "seditious".

For Echenique, this "illegitimate kidnapping" of the PP, which shows thereby "not being a state formation" and seeks to protect its "corrupt", is an "aberration." In his opinion, the progressive majority "should not allow" him to exercise his "blocking minority" to keep the main institution of the judicial sphere without renewing it for an entire legislature.

"We have already seen what it means to hijack the constitutional bodies in the United States with the reversal of the right to abortion and the return to the past 50 years ago," Echenique warned, referring to the recent decision of the US Supreme Court.

Therefore, he has called for a rethinking of recovering the legislative proposal to allow the election of members of the CGPJ in the General Courts by an absolute majority, an initiative that has already been registered although it was withdrawn more than a year ago at the request of the Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, when it seemed then that the PP agreed to an agreement that finally did not take place.

Echenique defends that enabling the path of the absolute majority and the competition of half of the parliamentary groups to elect the members of the governing body of the judges, which is the same system that is required to renew the board of directors of RTVE, guarantees ideological plurality.

"Does a three-fifths majority in Parliament make sense? In the era of almost perfect bipartisanship, yes, because it prevented a single group from renewing the constitutional bodies without counting on anyone, but once bipartisanship has ended in Spain, formulas can be explored that are constitutional and defend a lot of experts", defended the spokesman for the confederal group.

A position that they have expressed, both in public and in private, to the PSOE, although Echenique refuses to propose a legislative initiative alone because his aspiration is that this option of renewing by absolute majority prosper, something that is not possible if the socialists "do not accompany ".

On the other hand, he has detailed that they are going to continue insisting that the PSOE unblock during this legislature the bill that United We Can register with the aim of decriminalizing crimes called opinion, such as insulting the king or praising terrorism, given that "the ball is in the court" of its partners.

In his opinion, "the less Spain resembles" Turkey or authoritarian countries "the better", given that the persistence in the Penal Code of "medieval" crimes, such as offenses against religious sentiments, "is not receipt" in the XXI century.

Echenique believes that the reform of the crime of sedition can mean progress at the negotiating table in Catalonia, a measure that his space has proposed and that can provoke a certain consensus, given that the PSOE may be willing.

In fact, he has said that he perceives a certain improvement in relations between the Socialists and the ERC, praising that the situation in Catalonia has improved compared to the PP stage, where the conflict was "raw", with a commitment to a "dialogued and democracy", although more concrete progress must be made at the dialogue table during this legislature.

In any case, the final resolution is to "vote" although the "heart of the matter is what will be submitted for consultation, given that the president has said that the political agreement that is reached must be voted on while the independence parties think" differently ".
