Dominican Republic announces that it will expropriate land from Haiti for the construction of the border fence

MADRID, 3 Jun. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The government of the Dominican Republic has assured this Thursday that it will expropriate the land on which it is planned to build a wall on the border with Haiti if the State does not reach an agreement with the owner.

The Dominican Republic will be able to "obtain the expropriation" of that area "in the event that an agreement is not reached with the owner," says Article 2 of the law.

This area will be used for the construction of the perimeter fence and decree 292/22 declares it "urgent" for the Dominican State to take possession of the land so that construction work can begin.

In this sense, "the Ministry of Defense will carry out all acts, procedures and resources, both ordinary and extraordinary, in accordance with the laws", to determine the expropriation.

The Dominican Republic has already built 23 kilometers of fence on the border with Haiti, according to the newspaper 'Hoy Digital'

On February 21, the Dominican Republic began the construction of a 160-kilometer wall on the border with Haiti, to curb irregular migration and the smuggling of goods.

Regarding the wall that will cover more than half of the 392 kilometers of the border with Haiti, the president of the Dominican Republic, Luis Abinader, indicated that it will help "control" illegal migration and crime.

The wall will be 3.90 meters high and will be built with reinforced concrete and a metal structure, there will also be 170 watchtowers and some 71 access gates.

Since the assassination of the president, Jovenel Moise, the always turbulent political and economic situation in Haiti has been hit even harder. The power vacuum degenerated into a security crisis, with daily assassinations and kidnappings, especially in large areas of the capital.
