The Foreign Minister, Luigi Di Maio, has recognized this Friday that the solution to the latest government crisis in Italy does not seem to appear in the short term after the boycott of the 5 Star Movement (M5S) to a vote that led to the resignation of the prime minister, Mario Draghi, rejected by the president of the republic, Sergio Matarella.
"At this moment it is difficult to think that you can rebuild a majority," said Di Maio, a former M5S deputy who left the formation last month, taking fifty deputies with him, due to the government's decision to continue sending weapons to Ukraine.
The crisis has erupted due to the boycott of what is known as the "Auti Decree" (Aid Decree): 26,000 million euros in measures aimed at alleviating inflation, among other items, and has confronted the Prime Minister, Mario Draghi, with the leader of the M5S Giuseppe Conte.
The boycott has occurred despite the fact that the text was approved on May 2 by the Council of Ministers, in which the parties of Draghi's national unity coalition sit: the far-right League, the conservative Forza Italia, the Democratic Party, the left Free and Equal, the centrist Italia Viva and the M5S, which ended up describing the measures as insufficient.
"Without an act of maturity and responsibility on the part of the parties in the next few hours, on the part of all the parties that were in the majority", next Wednesday "Italy runs the risk of being left without a government and going to early elections."
Di Maio now leads the formation Together for the future, a group with a Europeanist and centrist vocation that occupies 53 seats in the Chamber of Deputies and 11 in the Italian Senate.
Di Maio recalls the economic crisis that the country is experiencing as a result of the war and has called for urgent measures to resolve the rise in fuel prices. "Unfortunately," he added in statements to the RTL radio station, "it gives me the feeling that the people who are in charge of this country have not yet understood the situation."
