Denmark reports that the Nord Stream 2 pipeline no longer leaks gas

STOCKHOLM, 1 Oct. (DPA/EP) -

The Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline no longer leaks gas on its underwater route through the Baltic Sea, according to the Danish authorities.

The pipeline operators have informed Copenhagen that the pressure in the pipeline has stabilized, so it is inferred that there is no longer a leak.

Since the early hours of last Monday, a total of four leaks have been reported in the Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 gas pipelines, built to transport Russian gas to central Europe through Baltic waters. Several European countries have assumed that it is a sabotage of this infrastructure.

At least two explosions have been detected, Denmark and Sweden reported last Thursday in a joint statement. Seismological instruments have detected tremors of 2.3 and 2.1 intensity that "probably correspond to an explosive charge of several hundred kilograms."

The next meeting in Prague of the heads of State and Government of the EU will serve to deal with this incident, as revealed by the President of the European Council, Charles Michel. These pose "a threat to the EU", Michel pointed out on Twitter after meeting in Brussels with the Danish Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen. "The damage is not accidental and must be thoroughly investigated," Frederiksen wrote on Twitter. These leaks "are serious for Europe."

The German Interior Minister, Nancy Faeser, has announced for her part the formation of an investigation group because "all the indications point to acts of sabotage", according to statements to the German newspaper 'Bild'. "Now we want to form an investigation team (...) in accordance with European law in which the three countries have investigators," she explained. There would thus be experts from the Navy, the Police and the secret services.

In addition Faeser has announced checks of the maritime zone in collaboration with Poland, Denmark and Sweden. "We are going to patrol the sea in close coordination. We want to have the maximum presence possible," he indicated. Therefore it will be sent to all available vessels of the German Federal Police.
