Díaz travels to the US this Wednesday "with a very intense agenda"

MADRID, 18 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Second Vice President and Minister of Labor, Yolanda Díaz, will travel to the United States this Wednesday, where she will have "a very intense agenda", which includes meetings with her counterpart, Marty Walsh, and with Senator Bernie Sanders, among other personalities.

Díaz announced this Monday, at the summer courses at El Escorial, that his first appointment will be with Walsh, with whom he has maintained "a close relationship" since "the worst phases of the pandemic."

"He shows a lot of interest in the regulation that we have formalized in Spain about the so-called 'Rider Law'. I am going to sign a memorandum of understanding with him for the first time, I hope that we will expand relations with this North American Administration," Díaz told the media .

The Labor Minister's agenda also includes a meeting with Senator Bernie Sander to discuss "current issues in the world as a whole."

As he does on all his trips abroad, Díaz will meet with the Spanish community residing in the United States to "know the reality of the Spanish" in that country and listen to their demands.

During her stay in the US, the Labor Minister is planning a meeting "with the leaders of the new trade unionism at Starbucks and Amazon."

"It arouses a lot of interest because they deal with different labor relations in a complex country, from the point of view of union organization. I think that learning can be very interesting for our country," he commented.

Workers at one of the Starbucks branches in Buffalo, upstate New York, voted in early December 2021 to form a union, a historic decision that made the coffee shop the first of more than 8,000 to the company has openings all over the United States to do so.

In the case of Amazon, the vote took place in April of this year, among the employees of an Amazon warehouse in Staten Island, in the state of New York, who also agreed to form a union, the first in the company since its creation 27 years ago.

The Second Vice President and Minister of Labor will also meet these days with the UN Deputy Secretary General, Amina J. Mohammed, since the Secretary General, António Guterres, is on vacation.

Díaz's intention is to present a resolution on the social economy that he hopes "will be reached within the UN.

The Minister of Labor recalled that the European Commission has worked "hugely on the social economy action plan", and has the support of the European Commissioner for Labor and Social Rights, Nicolas Schmit, and other Labor Ministers of the European Union.

"We have warned and summoned many ministers who are my counterparts there to serve as support, for the UN to give its approval to the social economy as one of the different ways of solving the economy," added Díaz.
