Congress votes to advance to 2023 the minimum broadband service to 100 MB proposed by the Senate

MADRID, 8 Jun. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Plenary of Congress votes this Thursday to bring forward the minimum broadband Internet service to 100 MB by mid-2023. This is one of the changes introduced in the General Telecommunications Bill, as it passes through the Senate, which must be endorsed by the Lower House for final approval.

Specifically, the amendment approved by the Senate, collected by Europa Press, calls on the Government to develop the necessary measures to achieve, within a year from the entry into force of this law --June 2023-- the universalization of broadband Internet access at a minimum speed of 100 MB per second downstream.

As stated in the preamble of the project itself, network coverage in Spain reaches 95% of the population for an access speed of 30 MB, and 87% for an access speed of 100 MB.

However, the objective established in the new provision implies advancing the objectives established in the Spain DigItal strategy by two years, which calls for reaching this minimum speed in universal service by 2025, and also the universal service regulation itself of the new law.

Thus, the minimum speed of broadband Internet access is set at 10 MB in the new law, with the provision of modifying the minimum access speed to 30 MB "as soon as possible depending on the extension of the networks and of the state of the art".

Another of the Senate's modifications that will be put to the vote this Thursday is a new section in the article dedicated to the specific rights of end users and consumers of available electronic communications networks and services.

Specifically, the right of users and consumers to be attended to in the official language of the State and the official language of the corresponding autonomous community is recognized when so required in the information offered by the communication services and all customer care services. .
