Ciudadanos is left with only one senator and will have to restructure its parliamentary group in the Senate

MADRID, 26 Jun. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The result of the elections last Sunday in Andalusia, in which Ciudadanos did not obtain representation, will also have an impact on the party at the national level in the Senate, since it will lose the two seats it had by autonomous appointment of the Andalusian Parliament and will remain only with a senator. This will force him to restructure his parliamentary group, which he shares with PRC and Teruel Exists, and opens the possibility that the senator from the orange formation ends up joining the Mixed Group.

With the new parliamentary arch in Andalusia resulting from the elections on June 19, the PP will have five senators by regional appointment, the PSOE three and one Vox, so that Citizens will lose the two seats it had by not having achieved representation.

These two senators from Ciudadanos who will leave the Upper House when the Andalusian Parliament gives the green light to the new seats are María Ponce Gallardo and José Luis Muñoz Lagares. In the case of the former, moreover, she has reported that on June 14, five days before the elections, she formalized her removal as a party member.

As Ponce Gallardo has explained these days in an open letter on his Twitter profile, the reasons that have led him to make this decision have had to do with the vote in favor of the 'yes it is' Law in Congress and " the disorganized and desperate Andalusian electoral campaign, where it seemed that Ciudadanos was transforming into a nationalist or Andalusian party".

In this way, after the departure of Ponce and Muñoz, Ciudadanos will be left with only one senator, Miguel Sánchez López, who is also a parliamentarian in the Upper House by autonomous designation of the Assembly of Murcia.

The bloodletting of votes that Ciudadanos has suffered in recent times in the regional Parliaments has also been reflected in the Senate, where it has gone from having its own parliamentary group in just one year, seeing how several of its senators dropped out of the Senate. party and kept the seat, or directly lost their seats by regional designation.

In fact, in recent months, Ciudadanos has seen Javier Alegre, Lorena Roldán, Fran Hervías, Ruth Goñi and Emilio Argüeso leave due to disagreements with the current party leadership. In addition, in the case of the latter, they still maintain the act of senators, integrated into the Mixed Group, which makes it impossible for Ciudadanos to replace them.

After these marches due to disagreements, the electoral results of May 4, 2021 in Madrid, in which Ciudadanos did not obtain representation either, caused the formation of Inés Arrimadas to lose two other senators --Tomás Marcos and Carlota Santiago--, remaining so only with three parliamentarians.

This fact forced Ciudadanos to add the senator from the PRC and the two parliamentarians from Teruel Exists in order to have the six senators necessary to maintain the parliamentary group, although it began to be called the 'Democratic Group'.

Now, left with only one senator, Ciudadanos is once again forced to restructure the parliamentary group, with the possibility that Miguel Sánchez will eventually join the Mixed Group, where he would share space with Vox, PAR, UPN and Ruth Goñi and Emilio Argueso.
