China extends the confinement of Hainan Island, with thousands of tourists trapped

BEIJING, 8 Aug. (DPA/EP) -

Chinese authorities on Monday extended mobility restrictions on the island of Hainan, where thousands of tourists remain trapped as part of efforts to contain an outbreak of coronavirus that has already left more than a thousand confirmed cases.

Initially, the lockdowns were limited to the tourist area of Sanya, but have since been extended to four more locations: Wanning, Danzhou, Qionghai and Lingshui. About ten million people live on the entire island and in Sanya alone 30,000 tourists would remain trapped in hotels and another 50,000 in apartments.

The authorities have ordered tourist establishments to grant discounts to these people, although at the same time they have recognized some "isolated cases" in which hotels have not complied and have even raised the price, according to the official newspaper 'Global Times'.

The Asian giant maintains a strict policy of 'zero cases' to contain the COVID-19 pandemic, which has resulted in indiscriminate measures at the slightest suspicion of a large outbreak of coronavirus.
