Chile Vamos will reject the new Constitution in the plebiscite on September 4

The coalition has explained that it will continue to support the creation of a new constitutional text that "does Chileans good"

MADRID, 5 Jun. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Chilean opposition coalition Chile Vamos, made up of Renovación Nacional, Evópoli and the Independent Democratic Union (UDI), has reported this Saturday on its position for the plebiscite that will take place on September 4 and in which it will determine whether it approves or rejects the proposal for a new Constitution for the country.

Before announcing their position as a coalition, each of the parties that make up Chile Vamos have met this Saturday with their militancies, until at 2:00 p.m. (8:00 p.m. in Spain), the president of Renovación Nacional, Francisco Chachuán, has announced that 97.17 percent of its militants support the option of rejecting the new Constitution.

"It has just been resolved with 97.17 percent rejecting the constitutional text proposed by the constitutional convention. We will defend freedom and the foundations of democratic institutions," Chachúan assured in a message on Twitter.

In Evópoli, 98.8 percent of its general council has also chosen not to approve the new Constitution. "We will continue working for a text that unites Chile and defends freedom," the party said in a tweet.

For his part, the president of the UDI, Javier Macaya, has also ratified that the general council of his party has decided not to approve the new Constitution. "Not approving what was done wrong to do it right again, uniting the country," Macaya said in another message on Twitter.

The coalition rejects the draft of the new Constitution -which is in its final review phase and is being drawn up by the Constitutional Convention- because it considers that "it has not been what Chileans expect", as reported by 'BioBioChile '.

"Here is a draft that has effectively not given the answers to the Chileans in the matters that matter most to them (...) We are very concerned about the draft of the Convention since we believe that it has not been up to the task (... ) but beyond black or white, the important thing is to understand that there must be changes, through a good process," the general secretary of the UDI, María José Hoffman, told CNN Chile last Thursday.

However, the parties that make up Chile Vamos have explained that although they will reject the new Constitution, they will continue to support the creation of a new constitutional text that "does Chile good."

"From the center right we are telling Chile that we do not like this proposal, but we believe that Chile wants and needs a new constitution," the former secretary general of National Renewal, Mario Desbordes, has detailed, according to 'La Tercera'.

The Evópoli leadership has also been in favor of seeking "all possible institutional and legal paths" to develop a new constitutional text for Chile in order to "overcome the shortcomings" of the "failed constitutional text proposed by the Constitutional Convention."

For its part, UDI has explained that it wants to join "the social majority that is for the changes, but in a responsible manner," as detailed by the party in a statement to which the aforementioned newspaper has had access.

"We cannot ignore the call of an immense majority of Chileans who are in favor of our country having a new constitutional text (...) a good and representative Constitution, which generates a broad consensus, which is the home of all and not only that of some", they added.
