Calviño highlights the "positive progress" of the labor market and the effects of the labor reform

MURCIA, 2 Sep. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The First Vice President of the Government and Minister of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation, Nadia Calviño, has pointed out that the unemployment data registered in August confirm "the positive progress of the labor market" and the effects of the latest labor reform.

In a press conference held in Murcia, Calviño pointed out that August is usually a month marked by the reduction in the number of Social Security affiliates and the increase in unemployment.

"It is never good news that there is an increase in unemployment and, of course, every unemployed person deserves that we dedicate ourselves, as we are doing, body and soul to reduce unemployment," he stressed.

However, he stressed that the evolution of the labor market in the accumulated of the year has been "the same or even better" than before the pandemic, and that, based on the data, this August has been "a record month" in terms of accumulated affiliation, above 20 million people, and lower unemployment.

"This is good news for all of us," said the first vice president, who assured that the latest labor reform undertaken by the Government "is helping to create jobs and improve the quality of that job", by registering an increase "very important" of indefinite contracts.

Regarding the coming months, he commented that the current situation is marked by "uncertainty" in the international arena, a context that he has described as "very complex and truculent", due to the invasion of Ukraine by Russia.

The number of unemployed registered in the offices of the public employment services (former Inem) increased by 40,428 people in August, 1.4% more than in July and is once again above 2.9 million unemployed. On its side, Social Security lost 189,963 affiliates in August, with a drop of 0.93% compared to the data recorded the previous month, the worst data since 2019.

At this point he wanted to highlight the good data from the tourist campaign in the Region of Murcia during the summer, as well as the "good progress" of the agri-food sector, in which the Community is, in his words, "a power."
