The EU Commissioner for the Interior, Ylva Johansson, has expressed her concern about the assault on the Melilla fence last Friday, which has resulted in 23 deaths, according to official figures, and has defended the need to respond to this type of offensives in front of an international border.
"The events on the Melilla border are deeply worrying. Firstly and most importantly, because of the loss of human lives. Secondly, because of the violent assault, by force, on an international border that cannot be consented to," he said. Johansson noted on Twitter.
For the Commissioner for the Interior, "this tragedy highlights the reasons why we need safe, realistic and long-term routes that minimize desperate trips destined for failure".
