Borrell asks to maintain support for Ukraine despite the "worrying" nuclear threats from Russia

BRUSELAS, 5 Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell, has asked this Wednesday to maintain support for Ukraine despite the "worrying" nuclear threats from Russia, which present a "fearsome" scenario in the conflict in Eastern Europe.

In a speech to the plenary session of the European Parliament in Strasbourg, France, Borrell stressed that the war in Ukraine is entering a "new phase" in the face of the Kremlin's nuclear rhetoric. "We are facing a fearful scenario and we must not close our eyes, a nuclear power is retreating from the conventional scenario and threatens to use a nuclear weapon," he stated.

Faced with this "worrying" scenario, the head of community diplomacy has defended that Europe must show that its support for kyiv "does not waver" and has insisted that aid to Ukraine is not a matter of European generosity but that the continent is at stake your own safety.

"It is a battle for the freedom of the Ukrainians and ours," Borrell proclaimed before the MEPs. "Our future is decided there. This is not the time to doubt, society must be able to continue this fight by supporting Ukraine," he stressed, to reiterate that Europeans must know that the price to pay "is worth it."

On the situation on the ground, the High Representative has valued the Ukrainian advances with its counteroffensives on various fronts in the east and south, a military success that he has attributed to the "agile tactics" of the Ukrainian Army.

"The war can be won on the battlefield, but above all in the field of ideas", he pointed out, to warn that Europe must counter Moscow's fight for "the supremacy of values".

For this reason, he has advocated carrying out an exercise in diplomacy and extending the European narrative to ensure that third countries have a real perception of the war in Ukraine and of the consequences of Russian aggression for energy, food and prices.
