Borrell affirms that the rupture of the Northern Ireland Protocol undermines "the confidence and credibility" of London

MADRID, 14 Jun. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell, assured this Monday that the unilateral modification approved by the British Government of the Northern Ireland Protocol "casts an unnecessary shadow" on cooperation with the European Union "undermining confidence and credibility.

"The UK's unilateral decision not to apply parts of the Northern Ireland Protocol casts an unnecessary shadow on cooperation between the European Union and the UK, undermining trust and credibility. At a time when we are facing a growing disregard for international norms and commitments, allies and partners must remain united," Borrell said on his Twitter account.

The Government of the United Kingdom has undertaken this Monday the announced unilateral modification of the Northern Ireland Protocol agreed by Brexit and has presented a law with which it wants to reduce controls and bureaucracy in trade with Ulster and that leaves out the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) of dispute resolution.

For his part, the Minister for Europe of the Government of Ireland, Thomas Byrne, has called for "calm" and "firmness" in the face of the unilateral modification of the Brexit Protocol for Northern Ireland approved on Monday by the British Government because "the law is in our part".

The Protocol was agreed in its day by London and Brussels to avoid a 'hard border' in Ulster and implies that Northern Ireland remains within the European common market. In practice, this forces the British authorities to introduce controls on the traffic of goods with the island of Great Britain, which did remain outside the single market.
