Biden now contemplates the month of July as the date to visit Saudi Arabia and Israel

MADRID, 4 Jun. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The president of the United States, Joe Biden, now plans to travel to Saudi Arabia and Israel in July, according to official sources told the NBC network, on condition of anonymity.

These trips would initially form part of a "wide tour" regionally, according to these sources, initially planned for the end of this month but which has finally been delayed for undisclosed reasons.

This past Friday, Biden had publicly declared that there were no "direct plans" to visit Saudi Arabia, although if necessary he would hold meetings with the kingdom's leaders.

"We are working on a trip to Israel and Saudi Arabia for a GCC 3 Summit," a senior administration official told NBC News. "We are working to confirm dates," he added, "and when we have something to announce, we will."

Biden's plans to visit Saudi Arabia came under fire from NGOs after the president vowed to treat the Arab kingdom as a "pariah" following the murder of journalist Jamal Khashogi at the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul.

The CIA concluded in 2018 that Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the de facto ruler of Saudi Arabia, had ordered Khashogi's assassination. The crown prince has denied any personal involvement in his death.
