Biden and Scholz condemn Putin's nuclear threats and the "new escalation" of the conflict

MADRID, 10 Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) -

US President Joe Biden and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz have once again condemned Russia's annexation of four Ukrainian regions and Moscow's nuclear threats in a phone call on Sunday.

"During the meeting, the foreign minister and the US president agreed that the most recent Russian annexations of Ukrainian territories have been a massive violation of the principles of the United Nations charter and should be seen as an attempt to acquire foreign territory by force." , explains the German government spokesman, Steffen Hebestreit, in a statement.

Hebestreit has indicated that both leaders have condemned "this new escalation", before agreeing that "the partial mobilization of Russia has been a serious mistake".

"It shows once again the bitter price that Russian citizens have to pay for the miscalculations of President (of Russia, Vladimir) Putin," the letter reads.

In addition, in their telephone meeting they have criticized the recent nuclear threats from Moscow, statements that they have called "irresponsible", and before which they have agreed on "extraordinarily serious" consequences.

The leaders have also discussed global energy markets and the importance of ensuring affordable and sustainable energy supplies, the White House said in a statement.
