Bendodo admits "progress" in the negotiations for the CGPJ: "I hope they come to fruition as soon as possible"

MADRID, 17 Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The general coordinator of the PP, Elías Bendodo, has admitted that there is "progress" in the talks to reach an agreement in the General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ) but has appealed for prudence not to broadcast these negotiations live. Having said this, he has expressed his wish that they arrive "as soon as possible" at a "safe port".

In a press conference at the PP headquarters, after the meeting of the party's steering committee, Bendodo has indicated that on the part of the PP this negotiation is led directly by the Deputy Secretary of Institutional Affairs, Esteban González Pons, and has avoided giving details about the same.

"It would not be prudent for us to be broadcasting the progress of these talks live. And I say well, the progress of these talks," he said, to point out that they must be allowed to "continue to evolve at the pace set by the negotiators" of both parts.

When asked later how he assesses that the ERC wants to influence the appointments and claims that they are not hostile to his claims, Bendodo has reiterated that the renewal of the CGPJ is on the table of the negotiators and it would not be prudent to be broadcasting live how it evolves or to comment "what some parties or others ask for".

As for whether the agreement could be imminent, Bendodo has pointed out that his party's proposal is "clear" and goes along the lines of "reinforcing judicial independence and democratic quality" in Spain. "Let's let the negotiations advance, and I hope that they will come to fruition as soon as possible," he said.

The number three of the PP has stressed that the objective is that the judges "can choose the judges" as "recommended" by the European Union. "We understand that the Government will understand it and, therefore, will go along that line," he added.

When asked if he expects the tone to change in Tuesday's debate in the Senate, given that the Government and the PP are negotiating the CGPJ, he indicated that in the parliamentary duel a month ago they saw that Sánchez dedicated "almost two hours of his intervention to insult Feijóo", something that he has branded as "unprecedented".

After assuring that this attitude was a "mistake" on the part of Sánchez, he pointed out that now he has "a great opportunity to rectify his strategy" in this new face-to-face. In the case of the leader of the PP, he has said that he will be "predictable, solvent, with clear ideas and a clear concept of Spain", also launching "agreements for Spain". "For each insult there will be a proposal by the PP," he added.
