Belarra says that the PSOE's "legs are shaking" and blames judges with a "macho gaze" who misapply the law

MADRID, 1 Feb. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Minister for Social Rights and the 2030 Agenda, Ione Belarra, assured this Wednesday that her government partners' "legs are shaking" and they have been forced to undertake a reform of the 'only yes is yes' law. In addition, she has stressed that the problem is due to the incorrect application of the law by judges with a "macho and patriarchal look".

"I believe that it has already become clear throughout this legislature that in this government there are two political forces, one whose legs tend to tremble and the other which does not. I believe that, in this case, the PSOE is subjected to a lot of pressure from the PP and also from the judicial and media right-wing and they are forced to propose some kind of reform", he pointed out in an interview on TVE, collected by Europa Press.

The minister has assured that they are making proposals to comply with "this demand" of the PSOE that wants to reform the law, but, yes, "without touching the heart of the law, which is consent", she has qualified. In this sense, both blocks of the Executive are working on the reform and seeking agreement, Belarra assured when asked if she is participating in Equality or if the Ministry of Justice is leading the reform alone.

Regarding the reduction in sentences for aggressors that have occurred since the law came into force, the minister stressed that "it is a minority of judges who are incorrectly applying the law" and that, as happened in In 2004, when the law on gender violence was approved, "it takes a while" to be applied well.

Thus, he has compared the effects of this with those of the law against gender violence of the Government of José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero. "When a new law comes into force and, furthermore, a law that changes the vision, it takes a while and there are judges who continue to practice a macho and patriarchal look, who do not quite apply the law correctly," he added.

Asked about the stage of the negotiation for the reform of the 'only yes is yes' law, the minister assured that it makes her "blush" to hear the Popular Party "present itself as a champion of the defense of women's rights ". "Therefore, this debate that has been opened by the media right, the political right and the judicial right, I think it produces embarrassment because they are not very credible thinking that the PP is concerned about women's rights," she added.

From the Ministry of Equality, the minister has slipped that they have presented four proposals that are along the lines of "aggravating the criminal consequences for aggressors" and that they are "positive" measures. Of course, she has assured that the reforms that are made "are not going to correct the reductions in sentences" and, in her words, this is recognized by the socialist spokespersons.
