MADRID, 25 Ago. (EUROPA PRESS) -
The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, has announced that she plans to speak with the president of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, before his mandate expires at the end of this month, "probably" next week.
Bachelet wants to discuss with Maduro the issues that are still pending in terms of Human Rights. "I don't want the (previous) conversations and the promises to be forgotten," she explained at her final press conference as High Commissioner.
The former president has defended the collaboration of recent years not only with the Government of Venezuela, but also with civil society actors, and has pointed out that until 2019 the UN was "outside" the South American country.
Since a year, he added, "some progress" has been made, but he believes that "much remains to be done", for example, that legal proceedings against opponents are open to external observation. He has also demanded the opening of a proper office, despite the fact that today there are already 16 people working for the High Commissioner in Venezuela.
