Spanish coach Alejandro 'Aíto' García Reneses is the new coach of Marc Gasol's Bàsquet Girona and will lead the Catalan team in its debut in the ACB, after the promotion achieved against Estudiantes in the last campaign.
"Aíto García Reneses is the new coach of the first team of Bàsquet Girona. With extensive experience in national and European basketball, he becomes the highest representative of the technical team of the club's debut season in the elite," the team confirmed in a statement.
García Reneses has a long history on the bench, and in the 2013-14 season he made more than a thousand games as ACB coach (1,077 in total). He coached FC Barcelona (14 seasons), Club Joventut de Badalona (7), Málaga (3), Club Baloncesto Sevilla (2) and Gran Canaria (2).
His last experience was in the German ALBA Berlin (2017-21), which competed in the Euroleague, where he won one edition of the German Cup and the Bundesliga twice.
"After a sabbatical year, I decided to accept Girona's offer to continue training. Right now I'm waiting to form the best team I can to work with the greatest enthusiasm to improve the players and achieve the best results", assured García Reneses .
For his part, the president and founder of the club, Marc Gasol, still pending confirmation as to whether or not he will continue playing in the ACB, said he was "very happy" that Aíto joins the project with "the desire to start working" to make the 2022-23 squad "from now on".
