At least one person has died and three are missing after a fire started on a ferry Sunday afternoon off the island of Bohol in the Philippines, the Philippine Coast Guard reported early Monday.

Reports reaching the Eastern Visayas district, based in the city of Ormoc, on Leyte Island, have indicated that some 161 passengers have been rescued following the fire on the ship 'Mama Mary Chloe', of still undetermined origin. , as reported by the Philippine official news agency.

"The rescue operation has been swift with the help of the passengers and crew of the motor boats sailing the sea between Bohol and the Leyte area," the Coast Guard said in a statement.

The incident occurred at 1:00 p.m. (local time) on Sunday afternoon in the sea between the Tugas and Tilmobo islands, in Bohol. The ship was heading to the port of Bato, on the island of Leyte.

Of the 161 survivors, 99 have been transferred to Hilongos port in Leyte, 25 have been transferred to Tugas port in Bohol, and 37 have been transferred to a port on Gaus Island also in Bohol.

There were 157 passengers and eight crew members on the ferry. The ship had a capacity for 236 people.
