At least 11 injured in a new brawl in a prison in Ecuador

MADRID, 6 Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) -

At least 11 people have been injured this Wednesday as a result of disturbances that occurred inside the Ecuadorian prison of Litoral, in the city of Guayas, in the west of the country.

Of the total number of injured people, five are members of the National Police, while the other six are inmates, as detailed in a statement by the National Comprehensive Care Service for Adults Deprived of Liberty and Adolescent Offenders (SNAI) and has collected 'The Telegraph'.

So far no deaths have been recorded, although among the injured there are people with a serious diagnosis.

The riots began when shots were heard inside the prison and alerted the security services, which have intervened for control and prison order, according to the Ecuadorian Police in a statement.

During the days of Monday and Tuesday, brawls were recorded in the Ecuadorian prison of Cotopaxi that have resulted in 16 people dead and 43 injured.

This last one has been the fourth massacre registered in 2022, making a total of 92 deaths, and it would be the ninth in two years, with a total of 391 inmates killed by violent incidents in Ecuadorian prisons.

The Government of Guillermo Lasso has promised to reform the prison system, marked recurrently by incidents that even claim dozens of lives. Only last year some 300 inmates would have died, for which the Executive has proposed a series of initiatives, including a prison census.
