Senate President Ander Gil has condemned the attack on former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who was shot in the back while at an election rally in the city of Nara, in southwestern Japan.

"My strongest condemnation of the attack against former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe," wrote Ander Gil in a message on the social network Twitter.

He also wished her a speedy recovery. "Terror can never defeat freedom and democracy," the president of the Upper House has transferred.

After the shot, the former president collapsed on the ground and was rushed to the nearest hospital by helicopter. As reported by local authorities, Abe, 67, is in cardiorespiratory arrest.

For their part, the Japanese police have arrested a 41-year-old man, accused of attempted murder, and have confiscated his weapon. The suspect allegedly shot the former prime minister with a homemade shotgun. So far, the reason for the attack has not been revealed, according to the 'Yomiuri Shimbun'.
