Algeria denounces the "authentic summary executions" of migrants at the Melilla border

MADRID, 26 Jun. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Algerian government has denounced this Sunday the "authentic summary executions" that it attributes to the Moroccan security forces that repelled the assault on the Melilla fence last Friday and that according to the official balance has resulted in 23 sub-Saharans dead.

"The images of this carnage are extremely shocking," said the Algerian government's special envoy for Western Sahara and the Maghreb countries, Amar Belani, in statements to the Algerian news portal TSA.

"They are an example of the extreme brutality and disproportionate use of force that resemble authentic summary executions in these circumstances," he pointed out.

Belani has blamed Morocco for what happened and has called for an independent investigation. "These tragic events highlight the systematic violation of human rights by a State that has chosen, on the one hand, to exploit the ghost of immigration for the purpose of political blackmail and, on the other, to play the role of police - in exchange for cash - in outsourcing the management of the European Union's external borders", he argued.

The images of the dead immigrants in Melilla sink, according to Belani, Morocco's attempts to rebuild its image. "We are very far from the supposed exemplary role dramatized during the celebration of the summit in Marrakech of the Global Compact for safe, orderly and regular migration", she stressed.

Thus, Belani has summoned international organizations and specifically the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to open an "independent and transparent" investigation to "purify responsibilities and clarify these tragic events that have cracked the veneer of the supposed humanitarian approach in the management of migration issues".

For Belani, what happened on the border has revealed the "true face" of Morocco, "alleged 'champion' of migration within the African Union and headquarters of the African Migration Observatory."
