A Ukrainian court sentences two fighters loyal to Russia from Lugansk to eight and ten years in prison

MADRID, 21 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) -

A Ukrainian court has sentenced two fighters from the self-proclaimed republic of Lugansk, considered a "terrorist organization" by kyiv, to eight and ten years in prison for being part of the "occupation forces" in the war.

The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has reported that the court has ruled in favor of imprisoning these two people for the crimes of invasion of the territorial and state integrity, as well as for participating in illegal armed activities.

Both were captured by Ukrainian soldiers during fighting in the Lugansk region in May. One of them began his military career in forces loyal to Russia in 2015, while the other decided to enlist during the war to avoid a prison sentence for robbery.

The latter had been in and out of prison on several occasions and after being arrested once again in 2021 for robbery, he was offered the possibility of avoiding prison for the fourth time if he joined the ranks of the Lugansk "people's police". .

The SBU assures that its investigators "have gathered a powerful evidence base regarding these fighters, which has allowed them to be sentenced to prison terms. The judicial process has been carried out under articles 110 -invasion of territorial and State integrity-- and 260 --formation of military forces not provided for in the law-- collected in the Penal Code.
