A Pakistani court sentences the 'mastermind' of the 2008 Mumbai attacks to 15 years in prison

A court in Pakistan has sentenced to 15 years in prison the person considered to be the "mastermind" of the 2008 attacks in the Indian city of Bombay, which resulted in more than 170 deaths, years after information emerged about his death.

According to information collected by the Pakistani television network Geo TV, the suspect, Sayid Mir, was recently arrested in an operation by the Anti-Terrorist Department and the Punjab Provincial Intelligence Agency.

Official sources cited by this medium have indicated that Mir has been arrested in the framework of a terrorist financing case and have added that "he was discreetly tried and sentenced", before highlighting that he is serving a sentence in Kot prison Lachat.

The FBI had included Mir on its list of most wanted criminals and offered a reward of five million dollars (about 4.7 million euros) for any information that led to his arrest. Pakistani authorities had repeatedly indicated that the man, a senior Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) official, was dead.

During the Mumbai attacks, carried out over several days in November 2008, gunmen attacked several targets including two luxury hotels, a Jewish center and a train station. The attacks left more than 170 dead and more than 300 wounded.

LeT is one of several jihadist groups fighting the Indian Army in the disputed Kashmir region, amid accusations that it is backed by Pakistani security forces, which have denied any involvement.
