A new balance leaves 75 dead and more than 12,000 houses destroyed by the floods in Sudan

MADRID, 17 Ago. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Sudanese authorities have communicated this Tuesday the new balance of victims due to the floods caused by the torrential rains in the country, which amounts to 75 dead.

"The number of people killed by the floods rose to 75, leaving 12,551 houses completely destroyed and another 20,751 partially damaged," said the statement from the National Civil Defense Council, collected by Al Arabiya.

In addition, the rains have left thirty people injured.

The state authorities launched a request for help to humanitarian organizations and the Sudanese central government with the aim of providing the necessary support to deal with the situation.

According to United Nations estimates updated on Sunday, 136,000 people have been affected by the floods in Sudan since the start of this year's rainy season, which usually falls between the months of May and October.

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs estimates that 314,500 people were affected by the rains last season.

The Sudanese authorities were forced to declare a national state of emergency for a period of three months in 2020 due to torrential rains, which affected more than 650,000 people and destroyed, totally or partially, more than 110,000 houses.
