A boy dies and four young people are injured in a stabbing in the state of Wisconsin

MADRID, 31 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) -

At least one minor has died and four young people have been seriously injured this Saturday by a stabbing in the Apple River, in Somerset, Wisconsin, near the border with the state of Minnesota.

The victims were swimming in the river -- which is located in a popular area for camping and water activities -- when the incident occurred around 3:45 p.m. local time (9:45 p.m. Spanish peninsular time), CBSNews reported.

The fatal victim is a 17-year-old boy. On the other hand, a woman and three men in their 20s have been taken to a hospital, in critical condition, to receive treatment for the injuries caused.

The suspect is a 52-year-old Minnesota man who initially ran away but is currently in custody, so "there is no further danger to the public," according to a statement from the Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office.

When officers arrested the suspect, the alleged attacker was not carrying the weapon, so officers are searching for the used knife.

County authorities have described the scene as "chaotic" and "terrifying." "It's a tragedy," lamented Scott Knudson, county sheriff, in statements to the press collected by ABC News.

Knudson has indicated that, at the moment, the motive for the attack is unknown.
