Vote by mail for 23J continues to skyrocket and already exceeds two million requests, according to CSIF

MADRID, 7 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Independent Union Central and Civil Servants (CSIF) has demanded that Correos accelerate the hiring of personnel to reinforce the service in view of the general elections on July 23 and to deal with the "two million" requests to vote by email registered so far.

At the end of June, and according to the data provided at the time by the Comisiones Obreras (CCOO), 1.65 million requests to vote by correspondence had already been received, exceeding the entire volume managed in the 2019 general elections. And the deadline to request Voting by mail is still open and does not end until July 13.

In a statement, CSIF has denounced that 17 days after the general elections are held and already in the middle of the electoral campaign, "the promised reinforcements" by the Post Office have not arrived while the workload has suffered a considerable increase when reaching the two million requests to vote by mail.

"Correos assured that it will carry out an 'unprecedented' contract, formalizing 12,000 reinforcement contracts throughout Spain (...) however, from the work centers we are told that these reinforcements are not being noticed," complains the union, which adds the fact that 25 percent of the workforce is on vacation or that office attention has been extended by one hour on weekdays.

The union recalled that the 2,500 reinforcement contracts with which Correos paid for the municipal and regional elections on May 28 were "totally insufficient" and caused "an overexertion" by a workforce that "is chronically decimated."

Likewise, he has claimed that the company's workforce "is missing one employee in three" and that it has been "below the minimum for years." "There are hardly any casualties, retirements or transfers of employees to other administrations, which means that it is not prepared for situations like this in which work is going to multiply," he added.
