Tyson Carter succeeds Mirotic as 'MVP' of the Cup

BADALONA, 19 Feb. (EUROPA PRESS) -

Unicaja's shooting guard Tyson Carter is the new 'MVP' of the Copa del Rey after being chosen by fans and the media as the best player of the tournament, especially thanks to his great finish and his 17 points that helped Málaga to win against Lenovo Tenerife and add the second Cup to their record.

Tyson Carter hit three triples at a key moment in the final and this allowed Unicaja to take off. He finished the match with 17 points and 3 assists, for a rating of 17.

Despite not being the top scorer of the match (he was surpassed by Marcelinho Huertas and Giorgi Shermadini, from Lenovo Tenerife), he did manage to be the top scorer for a Unicaja team that celebrated its second Copa del Rey at the Badalona Olympic Stadium. Partly thanks to the American base.

Previously, in the semifinals, he had 12 points in the win over Real Madrid. A score achieved with 3 free throws and 3 triples, without a doubt the spearhead of this electric player who, when he appears, is decisive.

However, in the quarterfinals, when Unicaja began his 'machada' by eliminating a Barça (87-89) that was the current double champion until they met the typesetters, the man from Starkville stayed at 3 points, thanks to a single triple . So the 'MVP' of the 2023 Badalona Cup claimed responsibility when he played, going from less to more.

"The best thing is to be able to take the trophy back to Malaga. I didn't expect this 'MVP', but it's thanks to my teammates, who are great guys and players. It's the result of a lot of work and many hours," Carter acknowledged before the media.

"Since August we began to build the team, which went through ups and downs, but these days everything went well and it was conspired to make this title and MVP possible," added the 'MVP' of this Badalona Cup.

Carter is Unicaja's second 'MVP' in the Copa del Rey, since in 1990 this distinction was awarded to the best in the championship. He succeeds Jorge Garbajosa, currently president of the FEB, who was the best in the 2005 Zaragoza Cup, in which Unicaja beat Real Madrid.

In addition, the American succeeds Barça's Hispanic-Montenegrin Nikola Mirotic, who was the best in the previous edition of Granada 2022, and Carter's fellow Blaugrana and compatriot Cory Higgins, the best of 2021, on the 'MVP' list.
