Trump pleads not guilty to four counts of attempting to reverse the result of the 2020 election

Trump leaves the room and is released without preventive detention

The former president will appear before the courts again on August 28

Former United States President Donald Trump has pleaded not guilty to four charges before a Washington court in the framework of the investigation opened against him by prosecutor Jack Smith for his attempt to reverse the result of the 2020 elections.

Specifically, Trump has pleaded not guilty to conspiring to obstruct an official procedure and attempting to obstruct the certification of ballots at the polls and violating the right to vote, CNN has reported.

The first count carries a maximum sentence of five years, while the two counts of conspiracy and attempt to obstruct the certification of ballots at the polls each carry a maximum sentence of 20 years. Finally, for violating the right to vote, Trump could receive a maximum sentence of 10 years.

Before pleading not guilty, Justice Moxila Upadhyaya has read Trump's rights as a US citizen. "You have the right to remain silent. That means you are not required to give any statement to the police while charges are pending against you," she recalled.

Trump has been represented during the process by his lawyer, Todd Blanche, who already assisted him in the classified documents case, for which he pleaded not guilty in mid-June, as reported by NBC News.

Both prosecutor Jack Smith, who is leading the investigation against Trump, as well as Todd and another of Trump's lawyers, John Lauro, have been present in the room. Likewise, at least three agents who were part of the security during that January 6 were sitting in the court.

After the procedure, the former president has sworn to comply with the conditions of release, among which are not to speak about the case with witnesses unless it is in the presence of a lawyer. Prosecutors from Smith's office have not requested pretrial detention.

Judge Upadhyaya has set the next hearing for August 28 at 10:00 am (local time) and has referred the case to District Judge Tanya Chutkan, appointed by former President Barack Obama.

TRUMP AGAIN ARRESTED

Previously, the tycoon has traveled to the Barrett Prettyman courthouse in his vehicle from the Washington airport accompanied by several of his electoral campaign advisers: Susie Wiles, Chris LaCivita, Jason Miller and Steven Cheung. The lawyer Alina Habba was also present in the procession.

Upon entering the court, Trump has been arrested and, as on previous occasions, his fingerprints have been taken. Outside the building, both supporters and rivals of Trump have gathered with banners under the watchful eye of a strong police unit that has followed minute by minute the events both inside and outside the courthouse.

"President Trump is under siege in a way that we have never seen before," Habba sentenced shortly after the former president entered the courtroom to hear the reading of the four charges against him.

After the entire process, the former president will return to his luxury resort in Bedminster, New Jersey. He is expected to make statements from Ronald Reagan airport before leaving, according to CNN.

Prosecutors say Trump manipulated protesters into believing then-Vice President Mike Pence could change the results of the election, ultimately leading to the Jan. 6 storming of the Capitol.

The former president was already charged in March in the framework of the investigation against him for the alleged payment of a bribe to the porn actress Stephanie Clifford, known as Stormy Daniels, and also faces 39 charges in the case of the documents. classifieds found in his Mar-a-Lago, Florida mansion.
