The US Coast Guard announces that a plane has picked up new underwater noises in the search for Titan

MADRID, 21 Jun. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The United States Coast Guard has announced this Wednesday that a Canadian plane patrolling in the Atlantic has captured new underwater noises during operations to try to locate the Titan submarine, on board of which five people who disappeared on an expedition to the wreckage are traveling. of the Titanic.

An expert in the search work, Carl Hartsfield, has pointed out that it is difficult to discern the sounds captured by the P-3 plane, since it is necessary to "eliminate possible artificial sources that do not come from the 'Titan'. Previously, Canadian aircraft detected other noises of which hardly any details have been revealed.

The person in charge of this search, John Mauger, had previously explained that there are many metallic objects in the area where contact with the submarine was lost, sought from the surface but also from the air -- in case it could have come to the surface. --.

For his part, Captain Jamie Frederick pointed out at a press conference this Wednesday that the search perimeter is already double the size of the state of Connecticut and that a total of four kilometers deep is being covered under the surface.

There are at least two remote-controlled vehicles (ROV) --underwater robots-- active, as well as several flights that carry out continuous coverage of the site. Frederick has reported that a new search team will arrive in the next few hours.

Specifically, the French ship 'Atalante' is expected to arrive at the search area around 4:30 p.m. (local time). On board is an exploration robot "that can dive to a depth of 4,000 meters," NBC News has reported.

In addition, three other vessels -- John Cabot, Skandi Vinland and the Atlantic Merlin -- have reached the search area where the submarine was lost and have "side scan sonar capabilities."

Frederick has pointed out that the five passengers aboard the 'Titan' have "limited rations" of food and drink. "We have to stay optimistic and hopeful when we're in the middle of a search and rescue case," she said.

The submersible disappeared on Sunday about 700 kilometers off the Newfoundland coast, with no clues to its whereabouts at the moment. She lost contact with the surface less than two hours after starting the dive and experts estimate that the oxygen on board can last up to 96 hours, in the best of scenarios.

The luxury liner 'Titanic' is located about 600 kilometers off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada, at a depth of 3,800 meters below the sea surface. Its shipwreck occurred in 1912 and resulted in more than 1,500 deaths, although the remains of the wreck were not located until 1985.
