The Twenty-Seven condemn Hamas but urge Israel to act in accordance with International Law

The Twenty-seven members of the EU published this Sunday their new common position on the war in Gaza between Hamas and Israel; a conflict marked in recent days by the Israeli Army's warnings to the population in the north of the enclave to leave their homes to the south, in what the UN and the European Union itself consider an illegal practice of forced displacement.

In its statement this Sunday, member states of the European Council "condemn in the strongest terms the brutal and indiscriminate terrorist attacks by Hamas throughout Israel and deeply deplore the loss of life."

"There is no justification for terror," they add in their statement. Likewise, the Twenty-Seven demand that Hamas immediately release all the hostages it has in its possession, around 130 people, according to estimates by the Israeli Army.

To this, however, they add with "strong emphasis" that "Israel has the right to defend itself in line with Humanitarian and International law from such violent and indiscriminate attacks" and therefore reiterates "the importance of protecting all civilians in at all times."

Continuing with the current humanitarian situation in Gaza, the EU countries "reiterate the importance of providing urgent humanitarian aid" and declare their willingness to "continue supporting those Gazan civilians most in need in coordination with their allies."

One of the primary intentions, they add, is to guarantee "that terrorist organizations do not abuse this assistance."

Finally, they declare themselves still committed to a "durable and sustainable solution based on the coexistence of two states" through "revitalized efforts to restart the peace process in the Middle East."
