The industry cuts its sales by 6.2% in August and chains five months of declines

MADRID, 18 Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The industry's turnover fell by 6.2% last August compared to the same month in 2022, mainly due to the decline in sales of energy and intermediate goods, which decreased by 17. 7% and 13.1%, respectively, according to data released this Wednesday by the National Institute of Statistics (INE).

With the year-on-year decline in August, the industry's turnover has now seen five months of year-on-year declines, although that of August was more pronounced than that recorded the previous month (-5.1%).

Along with energy and intermediate goods, which led the declines in industrial turnover, sales of durable consumer goods (-7.6%) and capital goods (-0.9%) also decreased, compared to the increase experienced by non-durable consumer goods (4%).

The branches where sales increased the most compared to August 2022 were the manufacturing of electronic components (33.6%); naval, railway, aeronautical and space construction and combat vehicles (33.2%), and the tobacco industry (22.5%).

On the other hand, the largest year-on-year cuts in turnover were recorded by the chemical industry except for cleaning and polishing items, perfumes and cosmetics (-26.7%); the manufacture of household appliances (-22.7%) and metallurgy (-20.2%).

Corrected for the calendar effect and seasonality, the industry's turnover decreased by 6.3% in August compared to the same month of the previous year, a rate 1.4 points lower than that of July.

SALES INCREASE 0.7% IN THE MONTH

In monthly terms (August over July) and in data corrected for seasonality and calendar, the industry increased its sales by 0.7%, one tenth less than in July. However, with this monthly rebound, there are now two consecutive months in which the industry increases its turnover.

Two sectors presented positive rates in their sales in August: energy (8.7%) and durable consumer goods (0.4%). For their part, non-durable consumer goods did not experience any variation, while capital goods and intermediate goods reduced their monthly turnover by 3.1% and 1.1%, respectively.

The activities that increased their sales the most compared to July in the seasonally adjusted series were coke plants and oil refining (8.8%), the manufacture of machinery (3.6%) and the manufacture of computer, electronic and optical products (3.6%). 3%), while the largest monthly cuts were recorded in the tobacco industry (-8.6%), the manufacturing of metal products (-3.7%) and metallurgy (-3.6%).

SALES DECLINE IN 14 AUTONOMOUS COMMUNITIES

The industry's turnover increased last August in three autonomous communities in an interannual rate, while it decreased in 14 regions.

The only increases occurred in the Canary Islands (9.5%), La Rioja (3.7%) and the Basque Country (0.5%), while the steepest decreases were recorded in Cantabria (-16.8%). Balearic Islands (-16.6%) and Asturias (-13.5%).
