The Government of France does not rule out imposing a state of emergency to restore order after the protests

MADRID, 30 Jun. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Government of France will examine "all the hypotheses" to restore the "republican order" after the wave of protests in recent days, following the death of a teenager shot by the Police in Nanterre, which for the first time implies putting on table the potential declaration of a state of emergency.

The conservative opposition has called for this exceptional measure, which implies giving more power to the security forces and restricting freedoms, as a formula to stop the escalation of riots, which only on Thursday night resulted in more than 660 detainees and close to 250 agents and gendarmes injured, according to data from the Ministry of the Interior.

The last time France declared a state of emergency was in November 2015, due to the jihadist attacks in Paris. Initially, the Government can adopt it during a period of 12 days, renewable if the Parliament so deems.

The French Prime Minister, Élisabeth Borne, who has visited a police station in Évry-Courcouronnes together with the Minister of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin, has promised that the Government will study what is "the best response" to the current escalation, in an inter-ministerial meeting called urgently by the president, Emmanuel Macron.

The president, who has convened this exceptional forum for the second consecutive day, abruptly left the European Council in Brussels, without holding the usual press conference at the end of the two days of meetings.

Meanwhile, the Government is trying to take stock of the scope of some disturbances that have affected public roads and public and private properties. The Firefighters have received some 9,900 notices in the last 24 hours, including 3,880 related to fires in the street, according to Civil Protection data collected by the BFM TV network.
