The French Government mobilizes again 45,000 police and gendarmes for Saturday night

The Minister of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin, has announced that this Saturday the mobilization of 45,000 police and gendarmes will continue to stop the riots that occurred during the protests over the death at the hands of the Police of a 17-year-old teenager, Nahel M., the Tuesday in Nanterre.

"We have put a lot of resources in Lyon and Marseille without leaving the rest unprotected," said the minister during a visit to the Dreux police station.

However, for the moment, a curfew has not been decreed in these towns despite the riots that have occurred in the last four nights. The deployment of armored vehicles, helicopters and the Intervention Group of the National Gendarmerie (GIGN) is expected in response to requests from the municipalities of both cities.

The Bouches-du-Rhône police headquarters has announced the deployment of the GIGN in Marseilles and will have two armored vehicles from the Gendarmerie. Darmanin confirmed the deployment of five units of mobile forces in the city of Marseille "in order to fully restore public order."

On the other hand, Darmanin has revealed that the average age of the detainees is 17 years. She had previously reported that 30 percent of the more than 1,300 detainees were minors, including "12 or 13-year-old arsonists."

A spokeswoman for the Gendarmerie has also denounced that the agents were the object of "ambushes" last night. Up to 79 police officers were injured.
