The Foreign Ministers displaced to Guatemala meet due to the delay in Arévalo's inauguration

MADRID, 14 Ene. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Costa Rica, Arnoldo André, has summoned his displaced counterparts to Guatemala City due to the delay in the inauguration of the elected president, Bernardo Arévalo, scheduled for this Sunday.

"An urgent meeting of foreign ministers is scheduled by the Foreign Minister of Costa Rica in Guatemala City at three in the afternoon here. Three hours late and the Congress of Guatemala still does not allow the inauguration of the president elected by the people of Guatemala." , the Colombian president, Gustavo Petro, has revealed through a message published on the social network X.

Arévalo's inauguration is conditional on the constitution of the new Congress, whose session has been delayed by decision of its outgoing president, Shirley Rivera, due to doubts about the legality of the Semilla Movement led by Arévalo, instigated by the Public Prosecutor's Office. .

Rivera herself has denied that there was any bad intention in the delay of the solemn session. "It is important that the Credentials Commission meets and manages to give its opinion," she said in statements to the press reported by the newspaper 'Prensa Libre'.

"President Arévalo's party, the majority party, has had its legal status removed. The prosecutor's office, as in Peru, as in Colombia, has had an adverse attitude towards the presidency and has even tried to imprison the vice president elected by the people," Petro has highlighted in another message published in X.

This Sunday the Constitutional Court of Guatemala has finally refused to grant provisional protection to Semilla, so its 23 deputies will have to assume their positions as independents.

Furthermore, they will not be eligible to be elected to the Board of Directors of the Congress of the Republic of Guatemala, which will be established this Sunday with the inauguration of its 160 members.

The Semilla Movement had been negotiating with other formations the composition of the Board of Directors and there has even been speculation about an agreement by which the deputies of Arévalo's party would have agreed on up to 90 votes in favor of their proposal.

Arévalo himself has sent a message of calm and normality despite the delays in the constitution of the new Congress. "Everything is ready so that, at 4:00 p.m., as established by law, Karin Herrera and I, will be the President and Vice President of the Republic. Just as established by law," he published in X.

However, he has warned that "deputies have the responsibility to respect the popular will expressed at the polls" and has denounced that "an attempt is being made to violate democracy with illegalities, trifles and abuses of power." "The Guatemalan people and the international community are watching," she stressed.

Meanwhile, outside the legislative headquarters, a group of protesters have approached the surroundings of Congress and have broken the security fence.
