The eruption in Iceland is concentrated in the center of the fissure, where the lava flow emanates

MADRID, 19 Dic. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The volcanic eruption that began on Monday night in Iceland has evolved and, after covering almost the entire fissure of about four kilometers, is now concentrated in the center of the fissure, although the Government maintains the recommendation to all citizens not to approach the area.

The authorities have declared a state of emergency due to the eruption near the city of Grindavik (Reykjanes Peninsula), on the southwest coast of the island. The town had already been evacuated on November 10 and all roads connecting to it remain closed.

Seismicity has decreased in recent hours and volcanic activity is concentrated in the central part of the fissure that opened on Monday, where most of the magma that remained concentrated in an underground tunnel now flows, according to public television RUV.

The Government has clarified that there is no risk of personal injury nor have there been any incidents in air transport. The Minister of Infrastructure, Sigurdur Ingi Jóhannsson, has stated that, although it is "very difficult" to establish predictions in this type of case, it does seem that there has been "quite a bit of luck" in terms of the potential effects of the emergency.
