The delegation of MEPs analyzing the immersion visits the TSJC for the 25% of Spanish

The delegation of MEPs from the Petitions Committee of the European Parliament visiting Catalonia to analyze the linguistic immersion model went this Tuesday morning to the Superior Court of Justice of Catalonia (TSJC) to collect information on the judicial resolutions relating to the 25% of Spanish in teaching.

Judicial sources consulted by Europa Press have explained that the president of the TSJC, Jesús María Barrientos, and the judge Javier Aguayo, president of the Contentious Chamber, the one competent in this matter, have received the MEPs.

The meeting lasted from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. and the official members of the delegation are Yana Toom (Renew Europe, Estonia), who is the president of the delegation; Peter Jahr (EPP, Germany); Jaroslaw Duda (EPP, Poland); Kosma Zlotowski (ECR, Poland); Virginie Joron (ID, France) and Maria Angela Danzi (NI, Italy), who on Monday visited two schools in Baix Llobregat (Barcelona) and met with representatives of families, teachers and Catalan authorities.

The aforementioned sources have highlighted that at the meeting Barrientos and Aguayo have informed the MEPs about the resolutions that have been issued regarding 25% of Spanish and what stage the procedures are at.

In 2020, the TSJC issued a ruling ordering at least 25% of teaching hours in Spanish in the Catalan educational system, following an appeal from the State Attorney's Office, a ruling that was declared final in January 2022, after which The Generalitat issued a decree that explicitly established the "non-application" of percentages in the use of languages ​​in education.

The TSJC found that the new regulations prevent the application of its ruling on 25% and asked the Constitutional Court (TC) to rule on the constitutionality of the decree.

Meanwhile, the TSJC has issued several rulings that confirm the precautionary measures that it had applied to different schools, such as Turó de Drac in Canet de Mar (Barcelona), so that they teach at least one core subject in addition to language in Spanish.

Unlike the first sentence, which affects all of Catalonia, these respond to particular requests and therefore involve only one specific classroom each.
