The Constitutional Court of Guatemala grants protection to Arévalo to avoid legal actions before his possession

Arévalo meets with Felipe VI, displaced for Sunday's inauguration

MADRID, 13 Ene. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Constitutional Court of Guatemala has accepted an appeal for protection presented by the country's elected president, Bernardo Arévalo, to avoid legal actions that violate his right to pre-trial before his inauguration, scheduled for this Sunday.

The Court has accepted this appeal, which thus prevents his immunity from being affected, as reported by the newspaper 'Prensa Libre' in its digital edition.

The magistrates of the CC met urgently this Saturday to examine the protections presented in relation to the transfer of command between the outgoing president, Alejandro Giammattei, and Arévalo himself.

Thus, they also plan to examine the amparos filed by two of the elected deputies of the Semilla Movement led by Arévalo after the Permanent Commission of Congress decided to suspend them despite the fact that the Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE) informed them that the party is still active and current.

Arévalo's inauguration will take place on Sunday under great uncertainty due to speculation about legal actions and even the absence of deputies to, according to them, avoid the transfer of powers.

Meanwhile, Arévalo met this Saturday with the King of Spain, Felipe VI, who has traveled to the Central American country to attend the inauguration.

"I received His Majesty King Felipe VI of Spain on the occasion of the transmission of presidential command in which @KarinHerreraVP and I will assume the leadership of a government that will allow Guatemala to advance," he published in X.

The Spanish monarch arrived in Guatemala City at 7:57 a.m. (4:57 p.m., Spanish peninsular time) and was received by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mario Búcaro. This is the monarch's first visit to Guatemala since his enthronement.

For his part, the president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, has also called on other leaders on social networks to attend Arévalo's inauguration ceremony.

"I ask all the heads of state of the republics of America to attend the inauguration of President Arévalo in Guatemala. There are forces threatening a coup d'état. Our solidarity is fundamental. To everyone, do not abandon the democratic struggle of the Guatemalan people "Personally I will go to the Republic of Guatemala," he explained.
