Students condemn the "intolerable" sexist messages from La Rioja teaching students and ask for action to be taken

MADRID, 9 Sep. (EUROPA PRESS) -

Students have condemned the "intolerable" sexist and sexist messages that have occurred in a WhatsApp group of teaching students at the University of La Rioja and have asked to take the "pertinent measures" before these events that show that "some young people still the lack of education in equality is evident."

The Coordinator of Student Representatives of Public Universities (CREUP) has warned, in a statement, that these events question "whether training in values in the educational system is sufficient."

The president of CREUP, Maria Navarro, has stressed that making comments of this type is "inexcusable" and has asserted that these "have no place in the university model" that the Coordinator defends. "Not reporting it makes us complicit in this type of sexist attitudes," she added.

The Coordinator has thus demanded a "more consistent and continued education in social values" and has called on the entire university community of the University of La Rioja to participate in the concentration to reject these events called by its Student Council next Monday. September 11, at 12:00 p.m. in the gardens of the Vives Building.

On the other hand, the Student Front has regretted, in statements to Europa Press, these "sexist attitudes" that, they have warned, "are increasingly present in youth." "We cannot talk about isolated cases because in the end these attitudes respond to a systematic problem," he pointed out, to remember the sexist chants of young people at the Elías Ahúja Residence Hall, in Madrid.

"What these situations reflect is that a radical change is needed in the educational system. We need to promote equal education in all educational branches and in all study centers. But we cannot stop there (...) "If we want to guarantee an education in full equality, we must also build a society on the same terms that guarantees real equality in all areas," he stated.

In this sense, the Student Front considers that punishments that focus on "eradicating these attitudes individually do not truly address the problem," which is why it has demanded corrections adopted from "a global perspective that understands the problem for what it is: a generalized problem of machismo".

To achieve this, he pointed out, "it is essential to allocate resources and specialized personnel." Holding talks on sexual education and equality in all classrooms, accompaniment inside and outside of study centers for women victims of any type of sexist violence or hiring specialized personnel are some of the measures to take into account, according to the Front of Students, which has also claimed that teachers and the educational community learn "to transmit the need to build a more egalitarian model of society."
