STATEMENT: Stability, environment and salary, the conditions that young Spanish people value most in a job

Madrid, March 21, 2023.- Stability, a good work environment and having a slightly higher salary, these are the conditions that young Spaniards value most when starting to work in a company, according to the latest Young Report. Business Talents on the attitudes and trends of young Spanish pre-university students, promoted and carried out by ABANCA, ESIC, Herbalife Nutrition and Praxis MMT.

Thus, for 30.4% of the students surveyed, the main reason for joining a company is that it offers job stability, followed by a pleasant environment (27.2%) and receiving a higher salary (26 .8%). “The fact that for young people the main incentive when it comes to working for a company is stability is a reasonable response and not surprising, given the conditions of the labor market in Spain. Unfortunately, our country has the highest unemployment rates in the EU, and this problem is even greater in the case of young people, so it is essential for them to find stability and they prioritize being able to maintain a job over time over other issues” , says Mario Martínez, director of the Young Business Talents Report.

Regarding the factors that they consider most important for finding a job, 42.9% of the students answered that they are the interest and desire to work, followed by a good level of languages (41.4%), having knowledge (40, 2%) and experience (39.3%). In this section, women are more confident about their academic future and the degree they will study (75.2%) than men (60.6%).

More prepared than their parents

Regarding whether they believe that what they are studying will be useful for their professional career, the majority (70.8%) think that it will be useful; a change in trend that reflects an increase in positive responses compared to the previous year (68.4%).

More pessimistic than a year ago

When asked about what they think the youth employment situation will be like, young people are more pessimistic than a year ago and believe that it will be worse or much worse in the next five years (41.4% compared to 38% the previous year ). By gender, men are slightly more optimistic than women, while, by community, it is those from Andalusia and the Canary Islands who see the future with the most possibilities, and those from Navarra and the Basque Country the least.

When asked if they would agree to change their residence to another country for work reasons, almost 77% of the students answered yes (six points less than in 2021), with those from Catalonia, Madrid and Murcia being the most predisposed to leaving Spain. , and those of Navarra, the most reticent. Regarding the preference of countries to move to, the United States continues to be preferred (37.8%), followed by the United Kingdom (15.8%) and Italy (13.3%).

the undecided grow

Finally, the report also provides data on what professional activity they would like to do in the future, and at this point, the number of young people who would like to be entrepreneurs decreases, either by creating their own company or being self-employed (33.9%), data slightly lower than that of 2021 (34.4%). Those who want to be civil servants (19.8%) and employed by others (14%) also decreased, while those who were undecided grew (32.4%).

85.5% of young people find it difficult or very difficult to achieve success if they were the entrepreneurs themselves. Even so, a majority of men choose to be an entrepreneur (30%), while women prefer to be civil servants (23%). If the data is extracted by communities, the young people of Catalonia (41.8%) are the ones who show the greatest entrepreneurial spirit, while those of Aragon (27.1%) are the ones who are least interested. Regarding the reasons why they would want to start a business, the majority (45.8%) would do it to do what they like and 24.8% to be their own boss.
