Social Security adds 10,462 foreign affiliates in September after two months of declines

Social Security gained an average of 10,462 foreign affiliates in September, 0.4% more than the previous month, bringing the ninth month of the year to a close with 2,686,990 immigrant workers registered in the system.

With the advance of September, the average affiliation of foreigners returns to promotions after having lost 3,365 and 18,712 contributors in July and August, respectively.

Of the total number of foreign workers existing at the end of September, 55.6% were men and 44.4% were women, as reported this Tuesday by the Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration.

In seasonally adjusted terms, the affiliation of foreigners to Social Security increased in September by 11,914 contributors (0.4%), to a total of 2,669,101 employed people, 479,680 more than before the arrival of the pandemic.

Altogether, at the end of September, foreign workers represented 12.9% of the total number of people who were affiliated with Social Security in seasonally adjusted values.

Of the total number of foreigners affiliated at the end of the ninth month of the year, 881,774 came from EU countries (32.8%) and 1,805,216 came from third countries (67.2%). The largest groups of foreign workers are workers from Romania (337,765), Morocco (309,639), Italy (182,757), Colombia (171,982) and Venezuela (146,126).

In addition, the system has 65,946 members from Ukraine, 18,687 more than in January 2022 (39.5%), before the start of the war waged in the country by Russia.

The majority of workers from Ukraine who work in Spain, around 87%, are salaried and 13% are self-employed.

In the last year, the average affiliation of foreign workers has increased by 230,971 employees, which in relative terms implies an increase of 9.4%.

By regime, the majority of foreigners fall under the General Regime, which closed September with 2,253,419 foreign affiliates, 83.9% of the total and 0.3% more than in August.

For its part, the Special Regime for Self-Employed Workers (RETA) ended September with 427,801 foreign contributors, 0.6% more than the previous month. Of them, 14.9% are of Chinese nationality, followed by Romanians (10.9%) and Italians (9%).

Within the General Regime, the sectors that gained the most foreign contributors in September, in relative values, were education (21.7%), driven by the return to school, and agriculture, livestock and fishing (6.8%).

On the other hand, the greatest decreases were recorded in the activities of households as employers (-7.4%) and Public Administration (-6.6%).

The Special Agrarian System (which is part of the General Regime) gained 5.3% more foreigners compared to the previous month, while the Home System registered 1% fewer foreign contributors than in August.

By autonomous community, the average affiliation of foreigners rose in September in ten of them and fell in seven, mainly in Catalonia (-6,322 contributors) and the Balearic Islands (-3,310). The largest monthly increases, in absolute terms, occurred in Andalusia (7,424 contributors) and Madrid (6,926).
