Sánchez will focus on bilateral ties during his visit to China: he neither represents the EU nor will he discuss the peace plan

Brussels and Washington have been informed of the trip to Beijing

BRUSSELS, March 23 (EUROPA PRESS) -

The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, will focus his visit to China, in which he will meet with the President, Xi Jinping, on bilateral ties with the Asian giant, government sources have indicated, explaining that Sánchez does not represent the EU, nor will he discuss the Chinese peace plan for Ukraine.

The visit to Beijing comes in an international context marked by Russian aggression and after Xi presented his peace proposal for Ukraine to his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, on a several-day visit to Moscow. In this sense, in Moncloa they consider it inevitable to talk about the war in Ukraine during the trip, although they insist that Sánchez does not go to China as a spokesperson for the EU.

Both Brussels and Washington have been informed of the trip and, despite the fact that the situation represents a window of opportunity to discuss possible progress towards a peace solution in Ukraine, the chief executive, the first Western leader to go to China after the meeting of Xi and Putin, will not act as a mediator for the Twenty-seven.

On the other hand, the sources point out that the focus of the trip will be economic and to strengthen bilateral ties, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the establishment of relations between Spain and China.

In statements upon his arrival at the summit of EU leaders in Brussels, Sánchez stressed that any "stable and lasting" peace solution must be based on the conditions established by Kiev, something that the Chinese president will take on his trip on the 30th and March 31 to Beijing.

"It is important to know first-hand his position on peace in Ukraine and to convey to him that it will be the Ukrainians who will establish the conditions for the start of that peace, when it arrives," said the socialist leader.
