León will host this Monday and Tuesday the informal meeting of telecommunications ministers of the European Union (EU), a meeting framed in the Spanish presidency of the Council in which it seeks to advance a European regulatory model that serves as a global reference for innovation. competitiveness and the protection of digital rights, as reported by the Government.

The meeting will be chaired by the First Vice President and Acting Minister of Economic Affairs, Nadia Calviño, and the meeting will also be attended by the European Commissioner for the Internal Market, Thierry Breton, and representatives of various international and national organizations such as the International Telecommunications Union (ITU). ) or the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).

There will also be representatives from the Global System for Mobile Communications Association (GSMA), the Body of European Regulators of Electronic Communications (BEREC) and the National Competition Markets Commission (CNMC), among other institutions.

The meeting will start this Monday with a session dedicated to strengthening digital rights, "one of the most pressing challenges derived from rapid technological change," said the Ministry of Economic Affairs.

At the meeting in León, neurotechnology and immersive and quantum technologies will also be discussed, while governments will be invited to reflect on digital rights and, with it, the regulation of the development of intelligence. artificial that is being negotiated during the Spanish presidency of the EU.

Tomorrow, Tuesday, October 24, the ministers will dedicate the first work session to the future of telecommunications, a sector that is undergoing "profound changes" and that faces challenges that require "enormous investments."

"The European regulatory framework must adjust to current realities, globalization, the emergence of new and important players, new market structures and disruptive technologies," the portfolio led by Calviño explained last week.

The Ministry has also stressed that the new regulation must provide the EU with the necessary framework to find the financing model for the deployment of future European telecommunications networks, mobilize public and private investment and promote Europe's digital sovereignty and competitiveness. global.

The meeting will end with a session focused on the work of European governments to achieve the objectives of the 2030 Digital Decade in four areas, specifically, training to achieve a population with digital capabilities and highly qualified professionals, secure and sustainable digital infrastructures , the digital transformation of the business fabric and the digitalization of public services.
