Russian Foreign Minister arrives in Beijing to meet with his Chinese counterpart

MADRID, 8 Abr. (EUROPA PRESS) -

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov arrived in the Chinese capital, Beijing, this Monday as part of a two-day official trip in which he is scheduled to meet with his Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi, to address issues of interest such as the war in Ukraine.

The Russian diplomatic portfolio had indicated the day before that both ministers have the objective of discussing "a broad range of bilateral cooperation issues, as well as interaction at the international level."

To do this, they will put "emphasis on joint work" in multilateral organizations and forums such as the United Nations, the BRICS, the G20, the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum (APEC) or the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).

"A detailed exchange of views is planned on a number of 'hot topics' and regional issues, including the Ukraine crisis and the situation in the Asia-Pacific region," reads a statement.

Lavrov and Wang last met in October in Beijing and held talks in Moscow in September, an example of the strong ties the two countries continue to maintain despite international pressure to isolate Russia.

Trade between Russia, hit by Western sanctions, and China, the world's second-largest economy, is also booming after reaching a record $240 billion in 2023. China has become a supplier of all types of products, from clothing to machinery and automobiles, following the exodus of Western manufacturers and multiple rounds of sanctions. At the same time, Russia has boosted the export of raw materials such as carbon and oil to China.
