Russian Defense Minister makes first appearance after Wagner crisis

MADRID, 26 Jun. (EUROPA PRESS) -

Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu made his first public appearance on Monday after the rebellion of the Wagner mercenary group, during an inspection of Russian forces in Ukraine.

The Russian Defense Ministry has released a video showing Shoigu reviewing his troops in eastern Ukraine, in the zone occupied after the Russian invasion.

"In the course of work in the area of the special military operation, the Russian Defense Minister, General Sergei Shoigu, has verified the outpost of one of the formations of the group of Western forces," reads a statement.

Shoigu has held a meeting with the command of the group, in which he has verified the "high efficiency in the identification and destruction of military equipment and concentrations of enemy personnel in the tactical areas of the zone of responsibility of the group".

As indicated by the portfolio through its profile on the Telegram social network, the minister has heard a report from the group's commander, Colonel General Yevgeni Nikiforov.

Russia is in a state of alert after the rebellion led this weekend by the Wagner mercenary group led by its leader, Yevgeni Prigozhin, who has seized the Russian city of Rostov, headquarters of the Russian military command for the south, and would have advanced towards the Russian capital.

The operation was ordered by Prigozhin after denouncing the death of many of his mercenaries in an attack by the Russian Army itself, which the Defense Ministry, which has been in confrontation with the mercenary leader for months, has categorically denied.
