Princess Leonor will begin her military training at the General Academy of Zaragoza after the summer

In the next three years he will go through the Army, the Navy and the Air Force, just like his father

The Government does not clarify for now if the Princess of Asturias will be able to swear the Constitution on the day of her 18th birthday

Princess Leonor will begin her military training next year at the General Academy of Zaragoza to spend the next three years in the three armies of the Spanish Armed Forces, thus following in the footsteps of King Felipe VI, as announced by the Defense Minister, Margarita Oak trees.

The Princess of Asturias, who is completing her second year of Baccalaureate in Wales, will begin her military training at the end of August or beginning of September in Zaragoza, where she will carry out the first course until the oath of allegiance, to continue later with the second course, explained the minister.

In the second year of his training, he will join the third year of the Marín Naval School, in Pontevedra, and will also embark on the Juan Sebastián Elcano school ship, while the third year he will take the fourth year at the General Air Academy and the Space in San Javier (Murcia).

In accordance with article 2 of the Military Career Law of 2007, the Government has the power to determine by royal decree the training received by the Princess of Asturias "taking into account the demands of her high representation and her status as heir to the Crown ". Precisely, what the Council of Ministers has done today has been to approve this royal decree, which has the endorsement of the Council of State, according to government sources.

The now King carried out his military studies between September 1985 and July 1988, passing through the three academies, swearing the flag in Zaragoza on October 11, 1985. At the end of it, he received in July 1989 the offices of lieutenant of infantry, naval lieutenant and lieutenant of the Aviation Weapon.

Robles has specified that the Princess of Asturias will be the head of her promotion, once she has completed her training in the 2025-2026 academic year, as a lieutenant in the Army and in the Air Force and as a lieutenant in the Navy and will be promoted as it does, although it will not occupy a place.

The Minister of Defense has also congratulated herself on the fact that in the future Spain will have a woman at the head of the Armed Forces, given that the head of state is also their captain general, in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution.

As explained by the Minister of Defense, the Casa del Rey has given its "favorable report" to the military training of the heiress proposed by the Government given the "special interest" in that it could begin as quickly as possible once the Princess Leonor completes her high school studies.

The minister has stressed that Princess Leonor will follow the same trajectory as her father, defending that, in addition, when she now joins the military career, she will do so with young people her age and will also receive "training in values and leadership" over these three years. Later, she will be able to join the university degree that she deems appropriate, she has limited herself.

ZARZUELA EXALTS THE IMPORTANCE OF TRAINING

From Zarzuela, the relevance and relevance of the future Queen receiving military training has also been valued. In a statement, the King and Queen have indicated that they consider it "very convenient and valuable" since it "reinforces service and delivery capabilities and facilitates representation tasks" that the Princess of Asturias must assume in the future.

In addition, Felipe VI and Queen Letizia are satisfied with this new formative stage, aware of the "will, interest and enthusiasm to receive this training" that their eldest daughter has. "Princess Leonor knows the demands and sacrifices that military life entails and she is very aware of the honor of training and serving alongside the men and women of our Armed Forces," adds Zarzuela.

The military training and career that the Government has designed for him "will provide him with specific knowledge and skills for the military field" and at the same time "will expressly promote virtues such as loyalty, discipline, courage or camaraderie, and principles such as responsibility, exemplarity or austerity" that will serve him in his role at the service of the Spanish, emphasizes the Casa del Rey.

On the other hand, both the Government and Zarzuela have placed special emphasis on the fact that in parliamentary monarchies such as the Spanish one, the heirs receive this type of training. Thus, from the House of the King it has been stressed that it is "a widely observed and shared tradition" in the European royal houses that future monarchs develop a military career in addition to receiving university training, since as heads of state they will also have to exercise the supreme command of the Armed Forces.

OATH OF THE CONSTITUTION

Once the military training that the Princess of Asturias will receive is known, it remains to be clarified when the oath of the Constitution that she should take when she comes of age on October 31 will take place, as her father did at the time.

The Government has avoided clarifying whether said oath could be postponed due to the electoral calendar, since the Cortes could be dissolved by that date. In this sense, the minister spokesperson, Isabel Rodríguez, has limited herself to pointing out that in this case the "constitutional provisions" will also be complied with.

When the time comes, the spokeswoman stated, the Government will address the matter with the King's House, within the "normal institutional relationship" and "we will go hand in hand with the Royal House" when making the decision.

The possibility that Congress and the Senate will be dissolved by October 31 due to the call for general elections has been generating some debate in recent months. The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, has at all times rejected an electoral advance so that the elections would be held in December, which could precisely make it easier for the Princess of Asturias to comply with the formalism on the scheduled date.

This is how a legal report from Congress that was released a few months ago contemplates it. According to this document, drawn up by Manuel Delgado-Iribarren, a lawyer for the Mixed Commission for the European Union, the elections should be held no later than December 10, 2023. Usually, the Prime Minister dissolves the Parliament 54 days before the date of the elections. elections, but it is not necessary to do so because there is the option of letting the Chambers' mandate run out.

In accordance with article 68.4 of the Constitution, that mandate ends four years after the election of the Chambers or the day of dissolution. Thus, there is the option of letting the mandate expire on November 10, 2023, four years after the last electoral date.

If this formula of "calling for elections due to expiration of the mandate of the Chambers" is chosen, the document states, "between October 16 and November 10, 2023 (when their mandate would end) the Chambers maintain all their powers Constitutional Rules", which includes the swearing-in ceremony of the future Queen's Constitution.
