NATO confirmed this Monday that during 2024 it will carry out the largest military maneuvers "in decades", with the participation of its 31 allies in addition to Sweden, which will serve to implement the new Defense plans agreed to last year in the midst of the threat from Russia. for the military invasion of Ukraine.

Although they have not specified the total number of troops and air and maritime means, NATO sources have confirmed to Europa Press that all the organization's allies will take part in 'Steadfast Defender', in exercises designed to demonstrate the capacity of deploy reaction forces from North America and other parts of the Alliance, in order to reinforce the defense of Europe.

The maneuvers will be "a clear demonstration of transatlantic unity and strength and the determination to continue doing everything necessary for mutual protection and the values ​​and rules-based international order," the Atlantic organization explained. These large-scale exercises coincide with the 75th anniversary of NATO, which will hold its leaders' summit next July in Washington in what will be another sign of Western unity against Russia, in the face of the military invasion of Ukraine.

The United Kingdom has announced that it will deploy 20,000 troops throughout Eastern Europe for these maneuvers, NATO's largest since the Cold War, which would take place from February to June. Specifically, 16,000 British Navy soldiers, along with tanks, artillery and helicopters, will be deployed to Eastern Europe with the aim of carrying out military maneuvers and joint operations to "strengthen the readiness of the United Kingdom's ground forces in NATO." .

The Royal Navy will provide eight warships and submarines, as well as 2,000 marines. A battle group made up of F-35B aircraft and helicopters, which will accompany frigates and destroyers, will be deployed in the North Atlantic, the Norwegian Sea and the Baltic region.

The United Kingdom will also deploy more than 400 marines to the Arctic as part of "a task force" for allied amphibious operations in the area that seeks to "defend the alliance in one of the most hostile environments in the world."
