Montse Tomé, new women's national soccer team

MADRID, 5 Sep. (EUROPA PRESS) -

Montse Tomé has been appointed this Tuesday as the new women's national soccer team, a position in which she takes over from Jorge Vilda, dismissed from his position hours before, as confirmed by the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF).

"The RFEF has appointed Montse Tomé as national women's coach and she will be the first woman to hold this position in Spain. Tomé (Pola de Siero, 1982) has acted, since 2018, as second coach within Jorge Vilda's staff and is consolidated itself as a fundamental piece in the growth of the national team. Tomé's appointment responds to the regeneration measures announced by President Pedro Rocha," the organization said in a statement.

The Asturian was one of the names that sounded louder these days to relieve Vilda in the event that he went and was guaranteed by his years at the side of the Madrid coach, who was his 'right hand'. "She knows the dressing room very well and also has extensive knowledge of the excellent national academy," said the RFEF.

In fact, Tomé, a player until 2012, was chosen by Vilda himself in 2018 to take charge of the new Absolute Promises, which served as a bridge with the Absolute. Later, with the appointment of Laura del Río for this team and Sub-23, she went on to take charge of the Sub-15. She was also named the Under-17 coach when Toña Is stepped down in 2020.

It must be remembered that Montse Tomé was one of the eleven people who signed a statement on Sunday, August 26, making his position "available" to the RFEF for "the conduct shown" by the then president of the federation, Luis Rubiales, with the forward Jenni Beautiful. A day before, the president had surprisingly offered her to be the new sports director after announcing that he wanted to renew Jorge Vilda for four more years.

The Asturian will have little time to take on the great challenge for the current world champion weeks after she made history, since she will face the premiere of the new League of Nations at the end of September, which gives a ticket to the Paris Olympic Games. Spain will face Sweden at home on September 22 and will receive Switzerland in Córdoba on the 26th, matches for which it is expected to give its first list next week.
