Manchester City, the 'richest' club in Europe ahead of Real Madrid

The English club billed 731 million and the white, 714, according to the report by the consulting firm Deloitte

The income of the 20 richest clubs in Europe have grown by 13 percent last year

MADRID, 19 Ene. (EUROPA PRESS) -

Manchester City remains the club in Europe with the highest income, with 731 million euros, ahead of Real Madrid, with 714 million, and Liverpool, with 701.7, in the 2021-22 season, according to the report. Deloitte Football Money League' prepared by the consulting firm Deloitte.

The 20 "richest" European football clubs billed a total of 9,200 million euros last year, 13 percent more than the 8,200 million of the previous year, driven by the growth of "match day" revenue after the return of fans to stadiums after the pandemic.

In this sense, the income from this concept went from 111 million euros in the 2020-21 season, when matches were still being played with limited audiences due to the pandemic, to 1,400 million euros in 2021-22.

"Matchday revenue has been the main driver of growth for European clubs compared to the previous season, although there is still potential for growth with respect to pre-pandemic revenue," explained Concha Iglesias, partner in charge of Sports at Deloitte Spain. .

In addition, Iglesias stressed that the projects that the main clubs have underway, such as the new Bernabéu or Espai Barça, will allow them to attract additional income "through a business model that will allow their activity to be maximized 365 days a year."

For the first time in the history of the report's publication, more than half of the top 20 clubs with the highest revenues are from a single country. In this edition, 11 teams from the 'Premier League' (England) are within this select group, and five of the six biggest clubs in the English league had a growth in their income of 15 percent or more up to an increase total of 226 million.

The reasons are new commercial actions and the return of events outside of match days, such as concerts and stadium tours. The most outstanding jump of the season was that of Liverpool, who climbed from seventh to third place above Manchester United thanks to being a finalist in the 2021-22 Champions League.

Among the Spanish clubs, Real Madrid maintains the second place, with 714 million income; FC Barcelona is seventh, with 638.2 million; and Atlético de Madrid, twelfth, after entering 394 million euros.

For the first time, Deloitte's report also includes financial data for the top women's teams in Europe, which reported an average revenue of €2.4 million in the 2021-22 season.

FC Barcelona generated the highest income of all the clubs in the ranking. The champion of the Champions League in 2021 and finalist in 2022, generated income of 7.7 million euros in the 2021-22 season. Manchester United appears in second place, with 6 million euros, and Manchester City is third, with 5.1 million.

"Professional women's football is still starting its path and its reported income shows that there is still great potential for growth in the coming seasons. FC Barcelona should be highlighted above all, as it is the club that generated the most income from football feminine", stressed Concha Iglesias.
